History:

The British Government started ITIL during the 1980’s as classified standard to improve the performance of information technology. These standards were subsequently adopted by all the government and non-government entities in the coming years. The more popular it got, it got refined into more versions like ITIL V2, ITIL V3, ITIL V4. All of these have separate publications.  

1.      Current Version of ITIL:

The latest version of ITIL is ITIL V4, the latest one after other versions.

2.      How does it help?

It reduces the cost of the operation and increase productivity by removing confusion in practices and giving consistency.

3.      Where is it used?

It can be used across different businesses and industries wherever information technology is being used to provide value and benefits.

4.      At what stage should organizations and companies go for ITIL?

No maturity or start up step is required. It can be implemented at any level.

5.      What size of organization should adopt ITIL framework?

Any organization can use this but I has proven to work best for medium to large websites.

6.      Certifications on ITIL?

It has five levels.

·         On entry level there is ITIL Foundation Certification.

·         On second level, there is ITIL Practitioner Certification.

·         On middle level, there is ITIL Intermediate Certification.  

·         On second last number, there is ITIL ExpertCertification.

·         On the top, there is ITIL Master Certification.

It is divided into five core areas:

ü  Continual Service Improvement.

How many processes of ITIL Framework?

There are twenty five processes divided as follows:

Ø  ITIL Service Strategy

It comprises of Service Portfolio Management, Financial Management, and Strategy Management for IT Services, Demand Management, and Business Relationship Management.

Ø  ITIL Service Design:

Service Level Management, Service Catalog Management, Capacity Management, Availability Management, IT Service Continuity Management, Information Security Management, Supplier Management, and Design Coordination.

Ø  ITIL Service Transition:

Change Management, Change Evaluation, Release and Deployment Management, Service Validation and Testing, Service Asset and Configuration Management, Knowledge Management, and Transition Planning and Support/Project Management.

Ø  ITIL Service Operation:

Incident Management, Event Management, Access Management, Request Fulfillment, and Problem Management.

Ø  ITIL Continual Service Improvement (CSI):

Process Evaluation, Definition of CSI Initiatives, and Monitoring CSI Initiatives.

How to check the efficiency is using all this?

v  ITIL provides Plan-Do-Check-Act Cycle to evaluate the efficiency of everything being done.

A person who works on it:

·         Identifies the strategy for improvement.

·         Defines what you will measure.

·         Gathers the data.

·         Processes the data.

·         Analyzes the information and data.

·         Presents and uses the information.

·         Implements improvement.
